Materials testers study the chemical and physical properties of metallic and nonmetallic materials as part of quality control. They take samples and perform studies or test series in accordance with applicable standards, specifications and test regulations. They evaluate the results and document them in test reports.

If they discover material defects, they determine the causes and initiate remedial measures. Materials testers learn about the relations between structure and properties of materials and about how these can be affected through heat treatment and finishing.
